PARENTS: Clinton Longbottom & Augusta (neé Möller) Longbottom
CLINTON LONGBOTTOM (1924 - 1980)

AUGUSTA (NEÉ MÖLLER) LONGBOTTOM (b. 1926) Because of their middle-class status and his parents' old-fashioned beliefs in how a family should be structured, his father Clinton worked away from the Longbottom home, and his mother Augusta became a full-time housewife after Frank was born. Therefore, as an only child, Augusta was the biggest presence in Frank's childhood. She strictly doted upon Frank; she ensured he was well-immersed in both the educational and social aspects of life. He was home-schooled by Augusta, as most wizarding children, until he entered Hogwarts. She taught him manners, right from wrong, and the importance of life. Augusta was stern, but nurturing; and Frank clung to her as a child. To him, she is the strongest woman he knows. She is firm in her beliefs, and would do anything for her husband and son. It was from Augusta that Frank inherited his need to protect, to be strong, and steadfast. More so now, Frank admires her modern pureblood ideas, and both her and his father's stand against their families and their purist ideas. Sure, Augusta is firm and there was a part of Frank that was glad to leave to Hogwarts every year to spread his own wings, but he will always be thankful for Augusta and for the things she taught him. As she gets older, and especially since Clinton's passing, Frank wants to turn the tables and now take it upon himself to care for and protect his mother.

 politics
LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Order of the Phoenix

ROLE IN THE WAR: Equipped with years of Auror training and first-hand experience in the field, Frank is knowledgeable with both offensive and defensive combat and strategic planning. He is a skilled duelist, having excelled in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms. He's armed with very, very basic survival skills, which were touched upon years ago in Auror training. He can pitch a tent, start a fire, and locate the North Star. He could probably kill a rabbit to barbeque if he really had to, but he doesn't quite have the heart to do so. In terms of blending in to foreign locations, Frank is downright rubbish. His obvious height aside, he's not very familiar with foreign customs, and is especially oblivious to muggle culture. Just call him the wizarding Marcus Brody.

Frank is a reluctant leader. As an Auror, he was accustomed to working with a partner and following orders from the Head Auror. He took on a leadership-like stance when out in the field assisting civilians, but for the majority of his life, Frank took on the role of the obedient follower (I mean, he is married to Alice Longbottom). However, his Auror skills, his approachable demeanor, his instinct to protect, and his drive to please others, have naturally pushed his comrades to look to him as a pseudo-leader of the Order while abroad. Frank hates the responsibility; he fears letting people down and having blood on his hands (even if indirect, he will find a way to blame himself). Yet, refusing the role of leader would in turn his comrades down.

POLITICAL VIEWS: The Longbottoms are a moderate pureblood family. Two generations removed from the Blacks, Clinton Longbottom does not hold the same purist extremist views as his extended family, but he is also not outspoken against them. In a time when simply having an opinion can mean life or death, the Longbottoms have kept quiet in politics. However, Clinton and Augusta know the difference between right and wrong, between justice and injustice, and should the opportunity rise, they will not idly sit by. Close to his parents and their only child, Frank naturally inherited this political stance. For the Longbottoms, family is held high above all else, and that stops them from diving head-first in to heated political disputes. This technique had to be modified, of course, when Frank became an Auror. However, back before the war fueled, the Ministry was viewed as a rather neutral position. Frank became an Auror to protect the public, to lock evil wizards away in Azkaban. To him, it was not exactly picking a side, but doing a good deed for wizarding society.

After graduation the war began to escalate, and Frank was invited by Alastor Moody to join the Order of the Phoenix. It was his wife that convinced him to desert his loyalty to the Ministry and put his alliances with the Order. She never had to directly ask him, but she knew she feared her purist relatives would eventually get to her younger brother and cousin, and Frank realized there was no way the Ministry would take a stand against that situation. Despite his commitment to the Order, Frank still feels a deep-seeded loyalty to the Auror force. He still wants to lock Death Eaters up in Azkaban; he still wants to protect the public. Since the reveal of the Horcruxes, however, Frank has decided his alliance to the Order is a quicker path to ending the war, protecting society and Alice's family.

Frank stumbled across many muggleborn friends during his time at Hogwarts, and came to see no difference between he and them in turns of magic abilities. Sure, they talked about strange things called spatulas, but nothing that made them less worthy of magic. However, despite his support for muggle and muggleborn equality, Frank is ignorant of muggle culture. Raised in a strictly wizarding household, he had little exposure to the muggle world before meeting a muggleborns at school. Marrying a pureblood witch has not helped solved his obliviousness. If anything, he finds muggle customs funny, and will even poke fun at some traditions. He realizes muggles lack magic, and he therefore views them as vulnerable and in need of protection. He pities muggles, and their helplessness in the wizarding war. When it comes to half-breeds, such as vampires, werewolves, and centaurs, Frank is less forgiving. He sees them as dangerous and in need of restrictions, but he generally tries to ignore them as a whole.

 appearance
APPEARANCE: Overall, Frank's appearance makes him approachable. Despite his towering stance at 6'4", he is lean and lanky, with over-sized feet and hands that manage to further elongate his appearance. Like a Great Dane, there's more of him than he knows what to do with. Frank's eyes are pale blue, and his sandy brown hair is kept cropped close to his head to avoid any sort of maintenance of flyaway hairs in his line of view. He has a smile that stretches from cheek-to-cheek, and is hardly ever contained. Regardless of the many life-or-death situation Frank faces, he still manages to struggle keeping a straight face. At the most, he'll glare with a stern face, but anger is not a look Frank's face wears well.

Word on the street is that Frank has rather nice forearms. He might even have a nice pair of calves to match. Accustomed to an Auror lifestyle, he keeps healthy and fit enough to keep up with work. To Frank, life is not about waking every morning with the sun to fit in a few hours of exercise, but it is responsible to stay healthy. In addition to a fit figure, the Auror lifestyle has left him with dozens of scars. While the numbers have grown, and many remain small and subtle, Frank's lost count and forgotten many of the stories behind them. For the most part, his scars line his ribs and shoulders, all failed attempts of fatally hitting him square in the chest. His scars are an aspect of his appearance that, to him, blends in as it isn't out of the norm for Aurors to be dotted with them. It's just another part of the job.

Frank's style of clothing has not changed much since his school days (minus the school uniform). His clothing tends to be mismatched (usually outfits are thrown together at the last minute before dashing off somewhere), yet it's also relaxed and practical. He favors solid shirts, layered beneath flannels or sweaters, matched with dark corduroys and light shoes that tie securely. Frank tends to stay in the cools and neutrals, donning mostly blues, greens, browns, and greys. One must in his dress is a pocket to safely secure his wand. Frank is also never caught without his watch around his wrist. Passed down through the male Longbottom line, Frank inherited the watch on his seventeen birthday (as is tradition with wizards), and its presence on his person has given him a large sense of responsibility in both senses that it marked his arrival to manhood and that it's his duty to keep it safe for future Longbottom generations.

 personality
WAND: A firm, 13¼-inch dogwood wand with a dragon heartstring core.
DRAGON HEARTSTRING produces wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.

DOGWOOD wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy.
BOGGART: Simon Cowell Someone telling him that they strongly dislike him.
Essentially, this would entail the boggart shifting between the forms of Frank's family and friends, each one expressing their disappointments in him, and their development of dislike for him.
PATRONUS: A giraffe
A giraffe's most telling physical feature is the neck. Most obviously, the giraffe is a symbol of protection. Using its height from its long neck, the giraffe can peer out over the land, keeping a watchful eye out for itself and others. Symbolically, this impressive physical feature can infer "sticking one's neck out", meaning that one is willing to take risks, perhaps even while protecting the others it guards. The giraffe is also a symbol of vision. Long-reaching, far-seeing kind of vision. It's that long neck again. With its head lifted as high as the treetops it loves to snack on, the giraffe's vision is a focused on the horizon. This signifies optimism and hope for the future, as the eye is always on the horizon. The symbolic meaning of giraffe's also hints to strategy when gaining resources. The giraffe's favorite food is the Acacia. Its tall neck allows it to munch on the most delightful bits of the Acacia tree. The problem is, the acacia tree knows the giraffe's appetite for its fruits, and so therefore emits an enzyme that purposefully makes its leaves bitter - hence thwarting the giraffe from eating as much. But the giraffe is endlessly resourceful and clever. This is where strategy comes in. Knowing the acacia's tendency to turn bitter to discourage the giraffe from eating its leaves, the giraffe approaches the acacia tree upwind - hence avoiding the Acacia's burst of wind-borne enzymes that alert other trees a herd is feasting upon them. This is a lesson for us to approach our goals and challenges "upwind" or from an angle that will allow us the most resources without spoiling the process of attaining the fruits of our desires.

DETAILED PERSONALITY: If there is one characteristic that is Frank's core, it is his need to please others. He likes to be liked; he likes to be surrounded by family and friends. He hates the mere idea of someone hating him, and even worse, someone finding him a disappointment. His greatest fear is for someone to hate him, especially if that someone he considers a friend or a member of his family. Frank doesn't see himself as a bad person, works hard and tries his best, and for the most part is selfless. Therefore, logically, he gives no reason for anyone to dislike him. And those who he does give a reason to, are usually locked up in Azkaban. This desire to please is one of the main reasons Frank became an Auror. Receiving gratitude from those he's protected in the line of duty has been more rewarding than anything he's done in his life thus far.

Frank is an optimist. After all the exams he crammed for the night before and managed to pass, after all the hexes he’s taken and managed to walk away with all his body parts intact, after all the punishment plasters he's received from Alice and managed to remain married, Frank is still alive and generally happy with his life. As far as he’s concerned, if he’s, his family, and friends have all managed to get through all that and more, he knows everything will be okay. In the war, Frank has to be optimistic; if he doesn’t believe that in the end all will be well, then what’s the point of fighting? It is from this optimism that Frank's Gryffindor recklessness stems from. While he considers himself one of the more level-headed and cautious former Gryffindors, he does have bouts of jumping in to situations without much thought beforehand. However, he only dives in to dire situations if he knows that the only person who could face injuries is himself. Putting anyone else at risk is completely out of the question.

Able to see the light in every darkness, Frank also sees the best in everyone. Despite being a former Auror and knowing that it would do him much better to distrust most, he likes to believe everyone has the potential to be good and most everyone (minus a select few that Frank holds special grudges against) hold some redeeming qualities. Even if they can’t see it, Frank can pick it out. While he’s not too keen on Death Eaters, and most rich purebloods he automatically throws in to the group of narrow-minded purists affiliated with dark wizardry, he places his full trust in everyone else. He would trust his life with anyone in the Order, and thinks only the highest of those dedicated to the cause. While seeing the best in everyone makes Frank trustworthy, approachable, and a great friend, it can also make him naive when he decides to trust someone he probably shouldn't. While it's not a frequent occurrence, Frank's tendency to place trust in those who are slightly deceiving leads back to his unfailing optimism, occasional recklessness, and his constant need to please others. He knows that being able to point out strengths in someone will win him favor; he knows that trusting them will make him a friend. He's like a dog who lives to please its master, and while this characteristic has brought him many great comrades, there is always the possibility that his judgement will fail him and he'll skitter off with his tail between his legs.

 history
CHILDHOOD: Slightly off course of the common wizarding path of life (career, marriage, and children straight out of Hogwarts), Clinton and Augusta Longbottom waited eight years before adding children to their family. Marrying in 1945, Clinton and Augusta dedicated the first eight years of their marriage to their careers and focusing on the recovering world around them. 1945 marked both the end of the muggle world war and the defeat of the dark wizard Grindlewald, bringing a great shift in both the wizarding and muggle worlds, and a sense of peace and longevity began to settle in. The Longbottoms were working class, white-collared Ministry employees; Clinton worked in the Improper Use of Magic Office and Augusta worked in the Animagus Registry Office. Clinton managed to secure several promotions with the assistance of his first cousin Barty Crouch Sr., eventually working his way up to the head of the office by the end of his career. Augusta worked in the Animagus Registry Office until the birth of their son, Franklin Timothy Longbottom, in 1953. Augusta became a full-time homemaker, and the Longbottom family was complete.
